When there's too much going on in your head

Good morning, I've been looking back through some things I recorded several years ago, and this week I came across a little series called Clearing The Noise. It reminded me just how long I've been thinking about something very simple: how difficult it is to hear ourselves when there's too much going on in our heads.

Making a little room

Our heads get full.

Work. Family. Conversations. Things we should have done. Things we might need to do. Something somebody said three days ago. Something that might happen three months from now.

And somewhere amongst all of that noise, we're trying to think.

No wonder it can be difficult.

One of the exercises I talked about in Clearing The Noise was something I called a mind dump.

Nothing sophisticated.

Take a piece of paper and write down everything that's occupying your head.

Don't organise it. Don't solve it. Just get it out.

Because something changes when a thought moves from going round and round in your head to sitting there in front of you.

You can look at it and ask:

Does this actually need my attention?

Some things will.

Some can wait.

Some belong to yesterday and can't be changed.

Some belong to a tomorrow that hasn't happened.

And some, you realise, don't need to be carried at all.

Perhaps that's partly what I've been trying to create with Your Life, Your Call.

Not somewhere that gives you more things to think about.

There's enough of that already.

Somewhere that gives you a little space to hear your own thoughts amongst everything else.

A question to sit with

What am I carrying in my head today that doesn't actually need to be there?

A simple exercise for getting what's circling around in your head somewhere you can actually see it.

Before you go…

You don't have to work everything out today. Perhaps just notice what's asking for your attention.

Until next Sunday,
