What if you didn't need to know what's next?

I've been thinking about how quickly we can find ourselves looking for the next thing.

The next opportunity. The next role. The next promotion. The next company. Perhaps even a completely different direction.

There's nothing particularly wrong with looking ahead. But I wonder whether sometimes we're so busy asking what's next? that we don't spend enough time looking at where we are now.

Maybe work doesn't feel quite right anymore. Perhaps something that used to matter doesn't matter in the same way. We might be frustrated, bored, overlooked or simply tired. Or perhaps everything looks perfectly fine from the outside, but somewhere inside we're beginning to wonder whether this is still where we want to be.

Our instinct can be to find the answer. Update the CV. Look at jobs. Talk to recruiters. Work out the next move.

But perhaps there's a question before all of those.

Where am I now?

What still works? What doesn't? What do I actually want more of? What am I carrying because I've been carrying it for years? And what might I be overlooking because I'm already looking towards whatever comes next?

Maybe we don't need to know the answer yet.

Maybe there's value in staying with the questions for a little while before deciding where we're going.
